Wayside is excited to expand our Community Outreach programming which is an essential part of our work to keep people and pets together. By recognizing the interconnectedness of people and animals, we can work to improve the overall health and happiness of our community. We will achieve this through efforts to improve access to care and necessary resources, surrender prevention, and look forward to expanding our programming as we continue to identify the needs of our community.

Public Vaccination Clinics

Wayside Waifs hosts several low-cost vaccination outreach clinics each year. These are typically held on our campus, located at 3901 Martha Truman Road, Kansas City, Missouri.

Clinics are open to everyone and services are first come, first served, while supplies last. 

**Many of our Public Vaccination Clinics take place outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, such as lightning, thunderstorms, tornadoes, heavy rain with reduced visability, or extreme temperatures, clinics may be canceled or closed early at the discretion of Wayside staff. The safety of our clients’ pets, staff, and volunteers remains our top priority.**

Available Services 

There are several vaccination bundles available for adult animals, puppies, and kittens. Rabies vaccinations, microchips, heartworm preventative, and flea & tick prevention is also available at low cost. See the pricing for these items below.

This is a drive-thru only vaccination clinic and for the safety of pets and humans, you must remain in your vehicle at all times.

If your pet needs special assistance at the vet, this is not an appropriate event for your pet. Medical services will be denied to reactive animals.

What time does the event start?

Unless otherwise noted, drive-thru vaccination clinics start at 8:30am.

What time can we start lining up?

7:00am

How do we know how long the event will last?

The event lasts while supplies last or until approximately 12:30pm, we have a certain amount of dog vaccinations and cat vaccinations available for each event. Staff and volunteers closely monitor the line and number/type of animals in each vehicle. Decisions are made to stop taking more people depending on supplies left and time remaining. Traffic control volunteers are stationed at the entrance to communicate when we have reached capacity for the day. Additional signage will also be placed at the entrance when we are full, and the clinic is closed.  

If we have reached capacity early in the day, there is still a possibility that clients may leave the line for a variety of reasons or we may be operating at an above average pace, and the line may reopen. If you arrive and the line is closed, it is recommended to recheck within the last 1 hour of the event to see if any new spots are available. However, this does not guarantee that a spot will be available.  

How often are these held?

Dates vary and are dependent upon staffing, volunteers, funding availability, and weather constraints. Dates are announced several times throughout the year. Follow our social media and website for the most up-to-date information. Consider utilizing services at The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City or Pet Resource Center of Kansas City as they provide affordable veterinary care for the public year-round. 

How long should I expect to wait?

Times vary, but depending on how early you arrive, the wait time may be up to 2+ hours. Because of this, participants are encouraged to make sure they are prepared with adequate gas levels in their vehicles, snacks/water, etc.

Can I get out of my vehicle?

For the safety of all humans and animals, we ask that you remain in your vehicle with your animal at all times. Volunteers will transport your animal into our vaccination area, and then deliver them back to your car.

What brands of Flea/Tick/Heartwork preventative do you offer?

What if my dog is reactive, overly scared or nervous? 

Unfortunately, because of the high stress nature of this event, it may not be suitable for all animals. If our volunteers and staff are unable to safely handle your animal, we will be unable to complete services. Since Wayside’s team will not be attempting to handle your animal until it’s time for them to be vaccinated, we encourage owners to stay attuned to their dog’s behavior and assess whether this event will be a good fit for them, to prevent a potentially long wait ending without vaccination services. 

Examples of behavior that may prevent us from being able to complete services could include (but are not limited to): 

  • Exit seeking 
  • Head whipping  
  • Growling  
  • Snapping  
  • Lunging 

Denial of services is at the discretion of the vet clinic team. When we are seeing these behaviors, we end the interactions to avoid the animal jumping farther up the ladder of aggression for the safety of the staff and volunteers, as well as the comfortability of your pet. 

Are other resources available?

Yes! We will have a variety of free resources such as dog food, cat food, cat litter, leashes, collars, etc. Our supply varies and we cannot guarantee any specific resources.
