Vaccination Clinic FAQ
Here are some common questions about our vaccination clinics. If you have other questions please contact us at [email protected].
What can I expect when I arrive?
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a volunteer who will confirm your appointment and direct you where to park. A check in volunteer will approach your vehicle and start your appointment paperwork. When it’s time for your animal(s) to be seen by our veterinarians, a volunteer medical scribe and an animal runner will retrieve your animal from your vehicle. If your animal is reluctant to go without you, we may ask you to assist us in walking them to our vaccination services area. Once vaccination services are completed, we’ll help return your animal to your car. After the medical paperwork for your animal has been completed and any purchased prevention has been gathered, you’ll pay for services and be on your way!
How long can I expect to wait?
Actual vaccination services vary by the type of event, for example, events being held with the assistance of Veterinary Students under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian may take longer. Additionally, several appointments are scheduled for each time slot during a clinic. Please be prepared to wait up to 20 minutes after your scheduled appointment before your animal is seen.
Can I bring multiple animals to my appointment?
You can schedule up to three animals per appointment slot. If you have more than three animals needing services, you’ll need to schedule an additional appointment for the remaining animals.
What if my dog is reactive, overly scared, or nervous?
Unfortunately, because these events have the potential to be stressful, they may not be suitable for all animals. If our volunteers and staff feel they are unable to safely handle your animal, we will be unable to complete services and we recommend you see a full service veterinary clinic.
Examples of behavior that may prevent us from being able to complete services are (but are not limited to):
- Exit seeking
- Head whipping
- Growling
- Snapping
- Lunging
Determinations of whether or not services will be completed are made at the discretion of our vet clinic team.
Are other resources available at these clinics?
Yes, depending on availability! We often are able to provide free resources such as dog and cat food, litter, leashes, collars, etc. thanks to generous donations from our community! Our resources often vary and we cannot guarantee any specific resources will be available. Do you provide any follow up or ongoing care?
Unfortunately, Wayside Waifs or Wayside Waifs’ veterinary partners cannot provide ongoing follow-up or emergency care after your pet is seen at our wellness clinics. If your pet needs follow-up care, develops new symptoms, or experiences an emergency, they must be seen by your personal veterinarian or a local emergency veterinary clinic.

Will my pets have any side effects from the vaccinations?
Vaccines are an effective and safe way to protect pets and people from serious diseases. It is common for your pet to experience minor side effects after vaccinations. It’s important to understand the difference between minor side effects and vaccine reactions requiring immediate medical attention.
Minor side effects that may typically occur several hours after vaccine administration:
- Discomfort at the vaccine site
- Mild fever
- Decreased energy and/or appetite
Please call your veterinarian if these side effects last longer than 24 hours or if you have any concerns.
Vaccine reactions are less common and are considered an emergency. These less common, but very serious reactions typically occur 30-60 minutes after vaccine administration:
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Swelling and/or redness of the face, eyes, or feet
- Itchy skin and/or hives
- Severe cough and/or difficulty breathing
- Pale mucous membranes (gums)
- Collapse
- Anaphylactic shock
IF YOU NOTICE ANY SIGN OF A VACCINE REACTION, SEEK IMMEDIATE HELP AT THE NEAREST VETERINARY CLINIC
Who can use these services?
Wayside Waifs’ affordable and accessible vaccination program is designed to support pet owners facing financial challenges, helping keep pets healthy, safe, and with the families who love them. These services are made possible in part through the generosity of private donors and volunteers who believe every pet deserves access to basic preventative care, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances. We strongly encourage pet owners who are financially able to maintain an ongoing relationship with their personal veterinarian, while reserving these vital services for those who struggle to access care.
