Author Terry Pratchett said it best: “In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” What better way to feed into your cat’s ego than to present them with toys made by you with love and adoration? As the second installment in our summer DIY series, these easy, no-sew cat toys will make your cat feel like they’re on top of the world. Also, your cat will probably look super cute while playing with them––is that selfish?
For your catnip toys, you’ll need:
- Fabric of your choice
- Cotton balls
- Loose catnip
- Yarn (optional)
- Scissors
Start by cutting your fabric into squares roughly 5 x 5 in each. Use old t-shirts, your grandma’s leftover sewing scraps, or that fabric you bought to make something super cute and totally forgot about. Just make sure it’s soft and colorful.
Place a few cotton balls in the middle of your fabric squares, then sprinkle some loose catnip on top. Customize your cat toys by adding more cotton balls for a little extra squishy-ness or sprinkling a bit more catnip for added enrichment.
Pull the corners of your squares together, packing in the cotton balls and catnip. Tie off the toy using leftover strips of fabric or yarn, leaving a good-sized pouf on top.
Toss the toys to your cat and watch them go wild! If your cat is particularly dog-like, this would be the perfect time to introduce the game of fetch. They’ll have a blast!
Happy crafting!
